Las instalaciones fotovoltaicas se montan mayoritariamente a 24 Voltios, disponiendo de energía en corriente continua y a partir de ahí obteniendo corriente alterna. Pero en muchas aplicaciones necesitamos obtener también energía a 12 voltios.
El circuito que se utiliza es un convertidor DC-DC usando un buck, boost, o convertidor buck boost. Se usa un inductor, un conmutador tal como un FET, y un condensador para convertir voltajes DC con muy alta eficiencia, hasta el 95 %
